Historical building Conciergerie : a monument of French history to discover
This palace built in the 10th century takes its name from the Concierge, a key figure in the kingdom appointed directly by the king. His role was to oversee law and order, to coordinate the police and to record imprisonments. This monument was therefore both a seat of power on the Ile Saint-Louis and a prison. In the Middle Ages this former Palais de la Cité was the residence of numerous French kings before becoming a state prison under Charles V. However, it was during the Reign of Terror, during the French Revolution, that it gained its macabre reputation as the “antechamber to death”.

Since april 2008, the Centre des monuments nationaux manage the historical building. Several exhibitions take place during the year and tours of replica cells from the revolutionary period are possible. Visitors can see the cell where Marie-Antoinette was imprisoned as well as the guillotine blade which was used to execute Lacenaire the poet-assassin. A self-guided tour takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours while a group visit lasts 1½ hours. Guided tours take place every day between 11.15 am and 4.15 pm, no prior reservation is required.
