Best hotels Marais district of Paris offer authentic delights
The Marais is one of the most fascinating and culturally important areas of Paris, a network of small streets that today bustle with life as it's become a trendy hang-out for artists, designers and writers.
The best way to discover the Marais is on foot. You can simply just head out of our front door at Hotel de la Herse d'Or and discover it your own way, stopping for a coffee to watch the world go by. A more organised walk might start at the Place de la Bastille, which you'll know as the key site of the French Revolution of 1789. Today you'll see the ultra-modern new Opera House there - and if you're fortunate you might secure a cheap seat to one of its impressive productions.
Nearby is the Place des Vosges, one of the great hidden gardens of Paris and a reminder that in earlier times, the Marais was the elegant home of the city's elite. In pre-revolutionary times, kings came here to relax. Stroll over to the Rue des Rosiers, centre of the Jewish Quarter, now home to patisseries and cafes and the perfect place for lunch.
