Great Black Music Exhibition in Paris is a must, for all those who appreciate music originating from the African diaspora and the continent. Until the 24 August this extensive exhibition covers a selection of genres, within the classification of 'Black Music'. The venue, Cité de la Musique, is easy to reach, from the Hotel de la Herse d'Or. Simply catch the Metro Line 5, from Place de la Bastille, directly to the Parc de la Villette.
Great Black Music exhibition in Paris unifying Genres
The title, Great Black Music, is seemingly vague and somewhat perplexing for those familiar with the diversity of music from the African diaspora. The exhibition, however, illustrates the different strands of music, created by artists of African origin, illustrating the birth and evolution, while examining the harsh impact of the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade, recognised as the thread, unifying the Diaspora's artistic expression. Audio visual archives, digital interactive tools and training modules are all utilised superbly, to present an in-depth study.
From Trench Town, to Harlem, Dakar to Cairo, no stone is left unturned and artists like Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Cesaria Evora, Fela Kuti, Billy Holiday and Michael Jackson… take centre stage. Blues, Jazz, Afrobeat and Hip Hop genres, their origins and steady development, are illustrated and a unified call, for resistance from oppression, brings meaning to the broad classification, 'Black Music'.
