Situated in the north of Paris, Montmartre was a village until it became a part of the city in the mid 19th century. Today this district still retains a distinctive character and atmosphere uniquely its own. There are many attractions for the visitor to discover and enjoy, especially at this time of year when Montmartre embraces the Christmas spirit with a boundless and welcoming enthusiasm.
The festive season brings out the best in Montmartre
Rising 130 metres above Paris, the hill of Montmartre has a magical aura that is even more noticeable at Christmas. The Montmartre Christmas Market runs from December 5th to January 4th . With around 60 stalls surrounding the Sacré Coeur Basilica, you are sure to find a wonderful selection of gifts and seasonal treats, and there’s also weekend visits from Santa!
As you wander away from the market you will find many picturesque and quaint streets to explore, with a surprise around each corner. Did you know the hill is the location of the last remaining vineyard in Paris? This can be seen from the garden of the Montmartre Museum on the rue Cortot. Housed in a 17th century building, the museum is the perfect place to learn the history of this fascinating place.
Of course, Montmartre also acquired a reputation for its cabaret scene, with legendary nightspots such as Le Chat Noir. This proud tradition continues today and you should try to catch a show at Lapin Agile or the Moulin Rouge. As well as great entertainment, this will give you a taste of the ambience of Montmartre during the glory days of the Belle Epoque.
