Paris Carnival is one of the oldest carnivals in the world and on March 2 the streets of Paris will once again come alive with dancing, singing and outrageous costumes, all within walking distance of Hotel de la Herse d'Or.
Paris Carnival is an unforgettable experience
The history of Paris Carnival dates back hundreds of years to a time when it was one of the most eagerly awaited events on the city's calendar, and when it was celebrated in artworks by Monet and Manet among many others.
Disguised in outrageous masks, people could let their hair down - as they still do today, with some 15,000 people taking part and 40,000 cheering them on along the route. Traditionally, there have always been two parts to the parade. First there is the walk of the masks and then the processions which follow them. Carnival societies throughout Paris spend months planning what they're going to wear, working on their dance routines and making floats and giant masks.
It's an incredibly colourful and joyful event that's open to everyone, with the emphasis on the workers of Paris. You don't have to be a member of one of the societies to join the procession and indeed you don't even have to come from Paris so if the mood takes you on the day, why not become part of it? This year's Carnival ends up on the Place de la Republique with a free evening street party.
The second part of Paris Carnival is the Washerwomen's Queens of Mid-Lent parade which this year is on March 30. Women are encouraged to dress up as queens for the day, and, if they dare, men can dress up as women!
All of us at Hotel de la Herse d'Or love this event and we're delighted to be at the centre of it.
