The Paris Marathon, sport on an international scale
Last year over 50,000 participants registered to compete in the Paris Marathon. This major sporting event is indeed huge and acclaimed throughout the world. One of the world’s 5 big marathons, each year it brings together over a hundred nationalities and more than 60,000 visitors! This is a punishing but ultimately rewarding journey of 42.195 kilometres (26 miles and 385 yards) through the heart of Paris, to be faced by both professional and amateur athletes as a challenge to endurance and the human spirit.
The Paris Marathon, popular across the world
Organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the Paris Marathon is a sporting event of great prestige, with medals and t-shirts awarded to the best performing runners... However, as the event is open to both experienced athletes and amateur runners, the number of places is limited, so you need to register early if you wish to be a part of this world-famous race. Registration is always begun the previous year. The first phase began on April 15th, 2015 and the second on September 8th. For this 40th edition of the Paris Marathon, the number of registered participants is 49,000.
Discover Paris in a new way with the Paris Marathon
The departure point of the Paris Marathon is on the beautiful Champs Elysee and the finish line is on the Avenue Foch. The route winds through predominantly flat areas and essentially forms a closed loop of three stages, the first goes past the Louvre and around the outside of the Place de la Bastille, to the Porte de Vincennes (through the Nation) and the Boulevard Soult and the Porte Dorée. The second part involves a wide loop of the Bois de Vincennes before following the course of the Seine to the Boulevard Henri IV, via the rue de Charenton and the Daumesnil, and finally the Avenue Foch.
Whether you’re a runner or a spectator, this is an opportunity for you to combine sport and a getaway to one of the world’s most beautiful cities. You’ll see Paris from a new perspective and enjoy the good-natured atmosphere that pervades the streets of the capital on this special occasion.
