These late summer days are so precious that you cannot simply let them slip by ... Instead, why not take a little time to enjoy the sun amidst picturesque surroundings before the change of the seasons? The Place des Vosges is a wonderful location in which to spend some time, relaxing or strolling as the mood takes you, while the late summer sunshine tops up your reserves of vitamin D before the autumn. You cannot fail to be charmed by the serenity of this place, the oldest planned square in Paris and one of the brightest stars in the constellation that is the City of Light.
A place steeped in history ...
Declared a historic monument in 1954, the Place des Vosges, located in the Marais district, did not always possess the name by which it is so well known today. Named the ‘Place Royale’ by Henri IV, who had the square built, it did not become the ‘Place des Vosges’ until 1800, after being renamed several times. As evidenced by its various names, the square has been the privileged scene of many historical events.
A popular promenade with many points of interest
You’ll be struck by the architectural harmony of this square. Only the Pavilions of the King and Queen interrupt the regularity of the classic French style buildings in the centre of the north and south faces. The red bricks, vaulted arcades and blue slate roofs present a uniformity that was quite innovative when the square was inaugurated in 1612. At number 6 can be found the former home of Victor Hugo, which is open to the public as a museum. Within the square you’ll find well-kept lawns, fountains and a bosquet of venerable trees. In the centre stands an equestrian bronze of Louis XIII. This was erected in 1825 to replace the original, which suffered the ignominious fate of being melted down during the French Revolution.
A much-loved place of repose in the heart of the capital
Here in this almost hidden-away green space amidst the bustle of Paris you can stretch out and relax on the grass, browse the shops, enjoy some refreshments in a café or find a bench on which to immerse yourself in a good novel.
